What is Online Training?
Also known as computer based training (CBT), distance learning, or e-learning, online training is a form of instruction that takes place completely on the internet. It involves a variety of multimedia elements, including graphics, audio, video, and web-links, which all can be accessed through one’s internet browser. These elements are used in lieu of traditional classroom components.
In addition to presenting course material and content, online training gives students the opportunity for live interactions and real-time feedback for such things as quizzes and tests. Interactions between instructor and students are scheduled and also conducted via an online medium, through such methods as chat, e-mail, or other web-based communication.
To use online training, students should have a basic knowledge of computers. This should include, but is not limited to, the ability to use a mouse, which involves knowing the difference between left-click and right-click; the ability to open and close documents and web pages; and the ability to navigate a website and web pages. Those with no computer experience at all, may have trouble using our online training and, for their own benefit, may want to enroll in a basic computer training class before using any of our online courses.
Advantages of Online Training
Online Training is Learner-Centered and Self-Paced. One of the major benefits of online training is that online training is focused on the student and is self-paced which in inherently student-centered since participants can take the training whenever they like. Traditional classroom training is both instructor-centered and time and location constrained. By its very nature, with an instructor at the front of the room, the session is focused on what the instructors does or does not do. Even in highly facilitated classroom training, the instructor is still facilitating and this the center of attention.
Flexibility. Work, long commutes, families, hobbies, and many other things occupy the student’s time. Online training courses can be taken anytime, anywhere. Online training offers the advantage of working at student’s own pace, whenever it fits into their schedule; e.g. During your coffee/ lunch breaks at work, sitting on your couch and taking online courses instead of watching television, and listening to audio/video files while travelling to and from work are some of the ways online training courses can be taken up. This ensures flexibility in terms of time and effort.
Mobility. A place that has internet connection is a place to take advantage of. Online training would require a traditional registration process, followed by a user log in page, but now, since browsers are available on phones, tablets, and laptops, online courses are not only restricted to desktops; courses are configured to all types of devices.
Easy Accessibility. In a fast moving world, almost everything is readily accessible. Downloadable online notes, online support, online interaction, training videos that can be replayed, and assessments/quizzes that can be taken anytime during the course help professionals learn better and faster. The easier courses are to be reached, the easier it is for professionals to reach their goals.
Provides Just-In-Time Support. On-site training takes place at a set time in a specific location. Therefore, employees are unable to access the training resources on the job. Instead, they have to wait for the next scheduled training session. Online training allows them to address their concerns and overcome challenges at a moment’s notice. Employees have the power to focus on specific areas for improvement in order to bridge performance gaps. Another valuable “moment of need” tool is social learning. For instance, social media groups or online discussions where employees can ask questions or share tips.
Consistency. No matter how many employees you have, online training courses deliver the exact same content to everyone. Online training will never have a bad day of teaching, so you know all your employees will come away with the same quality of knowledge.
Online Training Can Be Archived and Re-Used. With online training, the complete course is generally available anytime so that learners can review and retake the the course as many times as they like and whenever they like. This is a huge advantage, especially for topics related to how people perform a task. For example, while performing a task at work, people can go back into an online course, review the steps in a process or examples of how to perform the task. This can be done simultaneously with the work, thus reducing mistakes and improving quality.
Cost effective. Online training ultimately saves time and money. As learners do not have to travel to training centers to attending classroom based training, they are not away for work for long periods of time and with online training the need for expensive classrooms and extended training staff are reduced therefore reducing training costs.
Progress Report. Online assessments test the ability to understand topics without the pressure of taking an actual exam. Some assessments can also be retaken and reconsidered if students are not satisfied with their scores. Properly justified and marked, online assessments bring about a fair scoring system that helps online students evaluate their understanding of a given subject.
Information Retention. Online courses help trainees retain and remember information with attractive images, videos, legible fonts, movie clips, animated descriptions, and more. Real-life examples are also given to explain concepts better. Displaying information in well-crafted ways lead to better understanding of learning content more than taking notes with pen and paper. Face-to-face instructor-led training can force trainees to deviate from topics because of long lectures, where speech is the major mode of communication.
